Koenders calls Kurds in the conflict in Iraq ‘absolutely essential’
Minister bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs mentions the role that the Kurds play in the fight against IS “absolutely essential”. Koenders said in Iraq with the leaders of the Kurdish Autonomous Region.
He underlined the importance of the Kurdish fighters, in a conversation with prime minister Barzani and deputy prime minister Talabani of the Kurdish Autonomous Region. Koenders believes it is important that the Kurdish leaders with the government in Baghdad to talk “because that is the only path towards sustainable stability”.
As soon as the terror group HAS been driven out, all the parties in Iraq are committed to reconciliation. Only in that way, people can quickly return to their homes. Minister Bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs visit is now Iraq, and stressed especially the importance of consultation.
Monday, he visited the village Hashansham, near the front in the city of Mosul in Northern Iraq. This village is freed from, and largely destroyed. Also, many mines are left behind.
