KNVB chairman Michael van Praag sets Friday in an interview with the Gaykrant that Dutch professional clubs gay football players is discouraged to publicly come out for their sexual orientation.
“We have 34 betaaldvoetbalclubs, but what say that? If we have a gay footballer in the first team would have, and he out of the closet would come in, he immediately by the public is abused,” says Of Prague, on the international day against homophobia.
“That is bad for his career and then the whole stadium against him. For a stadionpubliek is sometimes cruel. Very cruel. So we say some of the clubs then – guess him from the closet.”
Of Prague, that no names of clubs want to call it, acknowledges in the interview that homosexuality is still a taboo subject in the world of football. He says since taking office as THE president in 2008, is currently the subject of discussion.
“We will always doing, should remain. Also because there is each year a new generation of football players. Therefore we focus on the youth leaders and trainers to do this kind of things to identify and agree to get started.”
Of Prague, who, at the end of this year will stop if the KNVB-chairman, hopes that homophobia in the near future from the football driven.”It is our objective to provide the homophobia about ten years out of the football. Wouldn’t that be great?”
