Kerstdiners lonely elderly fully booked
More and more older people make use of a free christmas dinner that the National Ouderenfonds every year, with Van der Valk hotels.
This year slide of almost 4000 older people, at 3300 last year. All 48 of the participating restaurants are already fully booked.
“Next year, we hope to have even more tables to adjust to the growing group of lonely older people a fun evening,” says Jytte Reichert, spokesman of the Ouderenfonds. “Unfortunately We have people disappoint you, but those who need it, on the Second day of Christmas count on a phone call and a listening ear from one of our volunteers.”
Hundreds of volunteers of the Ouderenfonds went over the past weeks, the streets to the elderly in community centers and nursing homes to invite them for the kerstdiners. Ouderenorganisaties could, in their turn, lonely seniors sign up.
Christmas card campaign
The next two weeks, there can be dinner. In Drachten made Friday night 85 elderly people is already to eat. For Monday are ten kerstdiners planned in the Van der Valk restaurants in Eemnes, Arnhem and De Bilt, where local singers will be performing. Tuesday sings Willeke Alberti for the elderly in hotel Nijmegen-Lent.
PostNL also delivers a contribution, with the christmas card campaign, together with the Ouderenfonds. People can free a christmas card to send through the fund for dependent elderly people. “We expect about a hundred thousand to go,” says Reichert.
This weekend share supermarket chain Jumbo kerstdinerpakketten in more community centres and communes. Does the chain work together with civil society organisations such as the Ouderenfonds, Salvation Army, Dutch Refugee council and The Sunflower. With the packages, volunteers are able to give a free christmas meal to prepare for people who are in a social isolation sit.
According to the Nationaal Ouderenfonds in the Netherlands more than a million elderly people are lonely. That number increases as people are forced more and longer independent living at home.
