Kelly McGillis, who played Tom Cruise’s love interest in “Top Gun,” claims she wasn’t asked to reprise her role in the sequel to ‘ Top Gun: Maverick.”
In 1986, the original, McGillis’ character Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, was not only Maverick’s lover, she was also his flight instructor.
Entertainment Tonight asked the actress if she would be attending one of the film’s promotional events, she was diplomatic yet candid in her response, admitting, “I don’t know how to answer that, because it has not been done. And two, if and when it did happen, I would have to decide where I’m going, what I’m doing, what’s going on … but I can’t project what I may or may not do so in the future. I don’t have a clue, because I don’t know where I’m going.”

She also added that she has not yet seen the trailer for the follow-up, and pointing at the “Movies, other things. I don’t really keep in touch with everyone. I think I may have talked to a few people now and then, but the truth is, most of the films are very, very odd situations, because you’ve got a lot of people who come together from all different parts of the world.”
Jennifer Connelly plays a role in the upcoming ‘ Top Gun: Maverick,” but it is not yet clear what role they will play. If they are going on a Cruise from the lover’s in the microwave popcorn flick, McGillis isn’t bitter about it.
McGillis, 62, said she left Hollywood was to get healthy, both physically as well as psychologically.

“It was a challenge for me to make some sort of sense of self-worth or self-identity, the real self, other than what I did for a living,” she said of her time as an actress. “And it’s just — it’s not a priority to much of what was to be the priority in the first instance, it was the raising of my girls, and it’s best to have a sober parent I could be.”
She also added that her priorities had changed, but it was a great, cathartic decision to quit acting that way. “It was not a decision that I have to leave, it was just that other things become more important,” she explained. “I love acting, I love what I do and I love doing theatre, but I don’t know. As for me, my relationships with other people is far more important than my relationship to fame.”

McGillis, who was diagnosed with alpha-one-antitrypsin), a lung disorder, about five years ago, says she’s a homebody, and I don’t remember the last time she ever clocked in anywhere.
“I feel really blessed that I don’t have to work, you know? However, I do get the option to get it to work, so I’ve been really blessed in that way,” she said. “Not many people get to this function later on in life, so I feel very, very lucky.”
