Reps for Griffin not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment.
Shields told Fox News that Griffin hoped to make a bold message.
“Kathy and I are friends and we worked together before, so when we started doing this shoot, ” she said, ” I would like to do something in politics. I would like to make a statement,’ he explains. “We figured out what would be the best picture of it.”
Shields the image was intended to serve as an art-and he is aware that it might make some viewers uncomfortable.
“That is what art is meant to do,” he said. “Some people look and they find it delicious. Some people look and they hate it… I understand there are going to be people hate this. It is a very sensitive topic… but this is not real. We did not kill anybody, nor did I have the feeling that everyone must be killed. It is no different than a movie. It just happens to be a still image.”
Shields tweeted a link to a YouTube video with the title “Behind the scenes with Kathy Griffin” but the video is now removed. However, he later told Fox News that the video had glitches, which prompted him to take it down and then re-upload.
This is not the first time Shields’ photos have caused uproar. He was previously threatened with death over a photo that he took of the “Glee” actress Heather Morris with bruises on her face. The picture was criticized for making light of domestic violence.
For his recent collaboration with Griffin, he has no regrets.
“I can’t speak for her, [but] I know that she loves to stir the pot,” he said. “For me, I love the idea that we have freedom of speech. The fact that I am admitted to making an image like this says a lot. For me that is a powerful thing… no one killed me for this picture, so it’s not so bad. I love Kathy and I hope that they let me her in Guantanamo.”
