Securities and exchange commission John van den Heuvel of The Telegraph has been nominated in the election of Villamedia to Journalist of the Year.
Paul Vugts council of The Netherlands, is in the race for the prize, just like the Volkskrant reporter Natalie Righton and Jet Schouten (Radar) and Joop Bouma (True).
“We are proud of these nominations,” says Dolf Rogmans, president of the jury and editor-in-chief of Villamedia. “They reflect the trends in journalism in 2018. There is a growing stream of good investigative journalism, there is more and more (international) cooperation and specifically the safety of journalists has become an issue. Unfortunately, it is not obvious that journalists in the Netherlands are safely able to do their work.”
According to the jury, have Van den Heuvel and Vugts during the past year “and a top journalist displayed,” continue with work while their personal safety was in danger. Van den Heuvel appears for a while, not in the studio of RTL Boulevard, for which he also works, because the criminals it on him with and the risk of an attack on the journalist is too large.
The winners of the prize will be on Thursday 14 February 2019 published in Sound and Image in Hilversum. It is the thirteenth time that Villamedia the prize for Journalist of the Year awards.
