John Legend has opened up about playing his biggest role yet.

On Thursday, the “Ordinary People” singer spoke with People magazine about taking on the role of Jesus Christ in NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.”

“[Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice] have imagined what a real man would think that going through the betrayal, and the challenge to work together with your friends to fight against oppression. My task is to be the embodiment of that,” Legend told People.

The singer, who is the father of a daughter, Luna, and welcome a son in June, Chrissy Teigen, said playing the role of Jesus reminded him of “a very Christian upbringing in Springfield, Ohio.

“The message that I took from growing up in the church was the idea of loving your neighbor, giving to others and treating people as you would want to be treated,” he said. “You can learn things in every religion or without religion, but that is what I have done.”

Legend explained that his grandparents were active members in the church – his grandmother was an organist and his grandfather was a pastor. The star’s mother also assisted in the church and was the choir director.

“I was in choir rehearsals each week as a child, and I took the choir when I was older,” the 10-time Grammy winner said. “That was the basis of my career; I would not be where I am without the playing of gospel music in the church.”

Together with the Legend, Sara Bareilles star in the live production as Mary Magdalene and Alice Cooper as King Herod.

“Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” airs Easter Sunday on NBC.
