According to The Hollywood Reporter, the stand-alone film was picked up by Warner Bros. and will begin filming in New York in September of this year with the Phoenix to play Batman’s nemesis.
The film, which will be directed and co-written by “The Hangover” franchise, Todd Phillips, will be an “exploration of a man ignored by society [that] is not only a gritty nature of the study, but also a broader cautionary tale,” Warner Bros. said according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film will also take place in the ’80s and will not follow in the steps of a traditional comic-book movie, but more like a brutal crime drama, according to Variety.
For the fans wondering about Jared Leto, who most recently played the famous villain in “Suicide Squad,” Variety reports that the Oscar-winner for the “Suicide Squad” sequel, as well as a separate stand-alone project that is being developed by Warner Bros.
Phoenix, 43, has previously said he is not against the take over of the role of the Joker after the reports named him as the next actor to personify the dark comic character.
“I don’t know…it would be an interesting character, I don’t know,” Phoenix told Fandango in April, adding that he would not be opposed to comic book films if the conditions were good.
“I see it as a different film,” he said. “I would not say…’I won’t do Westerns.’ It depends on what it is. I don’t really care about genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker. If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that is what you want to do. So I would not say, hands down, no, I would not do it, that kind of movies.”
