‘Sand Storm’, a family drama in a bedoeïnengemeenschap, is the first film of the Jewish Israeli Elite Zexer. It is the first fully Arabic spoken Oscar submission from Israel.
‘Sand Storm’ won last week, six awards during the presentation of the Ophir Awards – the Israeli equivalent of the Oscars -including best film. The picture referred to in order to compete for a place on the longlist for the academy award for best non-English film. Israel sends for the first time, a whole in the Arabic-spoken film as a submission for the American film awards.
‘Sand Storm’ won earlier this year, the Grand Jury Priz in the category World Cinema Dramatic at the prestigious Sundance Festival.
The family drama plays out in a bedoeïenengemeenschap, an often poor and, according to human rights organisations, disadvantaged and discriminated community within the Israeli population.
In the past, took ten Israeli films shortlisted for the Oscars best foreign film, but the prize was never won.
