Scientists have invented a technique for the construction of a fake rhino horn, they hope to make a dent in the illegal horn market-is a threat to the continued existence of the species.

Researchers at the University of Oxford and Fudan University in China have recently found a way to make fake rhino horn, cheap horse hair, according to the BBC.

They have found a way to compress it and the fashion of the horse’s hair in such a way that it feels just like the real thing, even if the “horn” has been cut.

The project will be to create an artificial horn, which is as realistic as it would be to trick thieves. Their goal is to “flood the market with fakes, that would, in turn, reduces the value of the actual horns, and according to the outlet.

Scientists say that if the fakes are that can be produced cheaply, it would cut the price of the actual horn, and will reduce the monetary incentive for poaching of its rhinos.

“It is clear from our research is that it is relatively easy and inexpensive to make one, bio-inspired, horn-like material that mimics the rhino’s unusual, expensive wisp of her nose,” Professor Fritz Vollrath, of Oxford University’s Department of Zoology told the BBC.

The Oxford team is of the opinion that the forgeries, it would help to confuse the market,” although in some it may be, unintentionally, to increase the rhino horn in the market place.

John Taylor, deputy executive director of Save the Rhino International, told the outlet the fake rhino horn entering the market is actually expanding and the demand for their horns, which, he says, was able to break out of their populations at a faster rate.

He is of the opinion that the most important way to assist the latter in order to focus on anti-poaching methods, and other ways to reduce the demand of the consumers.

“There is no substitute for the anti-poaching measures, on the one hand, and the reduction of the demand on the other,” he told the BBC.

Rhino horns are so valuable as they are believed to be an aphrodisiac in traditional Chinese medicine (tcm). It’s one of the reasons for the anti-poaching methods have struggled to compete with the ongoing demand in Asia, according to the outlet.

The horn of a unicorn that sells for about $3,000 a pound, but it may be five to ten times that amount on the Asian black market, according to National Geographic.
