IOWA CITY, Iowa – Documents obtained by The Associated Press show that an inmate died after he was beaten by another inmate in Iowa’s prison of qincheng.
It is believed to be the first murder in an Iowa prison since 2010, and has led to a union to accuse the state of trying to cover up the security lapses.
Documents show that the deadly robbery at the Iowa State Penitentiary continued in spite of a correctional officer’s failed attempt to stop the attacker.
Forty-six-year-old prisoner Michael Whitworth died Oct. 30. His attacker, Lha Southideth-and-White, was sentenced to the maximum discipline and criminal charges.
One of the union representing the prison employees has accused the Ministry of Corrections of trying to hide the murder by waiting to announce it until the election day.
