Beachvolleyballer Maarten van Garderen is the new partner Christiaan Varenhorst. The 27-year-old Renswoudenaar, 115-fold international in the hall, is the replacement of Reinder Nummerdor, who stopped after the Olympic Games last summer.
“I was surprised when Varenhorst and coach Gijs Ronnes me approached,” says Van Garderen Friday in a press release of the knzb. “As world champions of the calibre Christiaan Varenhorst call, you have to think about it.”
“We have agreed to meet in Italy and a good conversation had. Beach volleyball, I find, is a wonderful sport, and I think that the game is good for me. As a team, Christiaan and I may have to get very far. I must of course start at zero, but it is a dream to be on the Olympic Games of Tokyo in action.”
Van Garderen is currently in the hall even as pro active in the Italian Bunge Ravenna. The passer/runner and also played in France and Germany. A lot of experience with beach volleyball, he has not.
“We have been looking for the best candidate to Christiaan to go play and then we came to him,” said Ronnes. “Maarten is a very good beachvolleyballer to be.”
World cup final
The now 26-year-old Varenhorst and Nummerdor played from August 2014 together and they were in two years very successfully.
The duo lost in 2015 in The Hague, the world cup final. Last year it was the quarterfinals of the terminus at the Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Van Garderen will be the new direction of his career for the Dutch team in the hall come true.
“I am very disappointed that Maarten is no longer available for Orange, but it will be the good way we have used do not disturb”, says coach Gido Vermeulen of the Dutch mannenteam.
