India conducts first successful test with antisatellietraket

The Indian prime minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday in a national speech on tv that India is successful a satellite out of the sky shot with a antisatellietraket, the so-called mission Shakti. He called it a major breakthrough in India’s space programme.

“This is a moment of pride for the country,” said Modi. According to Modi, India is only the fourth country with such anti-satellite weapon after the United States, Russia and China.

The South Asian nuclear power with 1.3 billion inhabitants, has an ambitious space program. Modi had announced last year that India, even for the 75th anniversary of Indian independence in 2022, and a manned flight to the space launches.

India stands a few weeks before the parliamentary elections. That will take place in seven phases from april 11 to may 19. About 900 million people may cast their vote.

Modi’s Hindu Nationalist y BJP as the favourite considered. He would be at an election victory to a second term of five years as head of government.
