Ice storm triggers travel dangers in the southern Plains

Crews pre-treat roads before the storm in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma highway officials warn motorists that a winter storm moves into the Southern Plains is creating slick spots on the roads and bridges.

Sleet reported for sun-up on Friday, in a band from southwest Oklahoma in the southern parts of Kansas and Missouri. Forecasters warn that the areas could see significant accumulations of ice before the storm moves during the holiday weekend.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has already declared a state of emergency that relates to each of the 77 provinces. The declaration activates the state emergency response plan. She has also relaxed size and weight restrictions for the state of the roads suitable for treatment.

Forecasters say the icy weather is also expected in parts of Illinois, Texas and northern Arkansas.
