There are many reasons for hair loss in men and women. Men usually experience hair loss because of hereditary reasons and due to hormonal factors like changes in the levels of testosterone. Excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking and stress are also some reasons for hair loss in men.
Women experience hair loss due to birth control pills, excessive use of harsh hair care products, hormonal changes, etc. Side effects of certain medications, nutritional deficiency and improper diet are also some of most common reasons for hair loss in men and women.
How to Prevent Hair Loss:
Healthy Diet: Eating a healthy diet is important to prevent hair loss. Hair contains keratin, a protein. Hence, including protein in your diet is very important for healthy hair. Vitamins and calcium are also necessary to strengthen hair follicles and increase hair growth. Increase the intake of milk, eggs, green vegetables, soybeans, carrots, fish, tomatoes, yogurt, spinach, almonds and other foods rich in calcium and vitamins. Increase your intake of folic acid as it is vital for healthy hair growth.
Hair Care: Avoid frequently changing hair care products. Avoid using harsh shampoos and consult a dermatologist for the right shampoo for your hair. Wash your hair with lukewarm water and never use very cold or hot water as it makes it brittle. Use a conditioner after shampooing as conditioners help to soften and detangle hair. Do not brush, comb or be rough with your hair soon after a hair wash because the roots are prone to breakage. Avoid using a hair dryer and to dry your hair. Using hot irons and blow dryers can damage the hair.
Water: Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water everyday. Lack of water can make the hair dry and prone to hair loss. Drink lots of water and get eight hours of sleep everyday. Lack of sleep can lead to stress and other problems which can cause hair loss.
Lubricate the Hair: Using a moisturizer will reduce split ends and promote hair growth by reducing breakage. Avoid overtly oily hair and use only a little moisturizer. Try lubricating the hair a couple of hours before a hair wash.
Massage: Massaging the scalp daily helps circulate blood. Move your fingers in a circular motion and massage the scalp slowly. Massaging makes your scalp warm and tingly, which is an indication of blood flowing to the scalp, which helps hair growth.
