The nineteen-year-old prison sentence for arms trafficking and war crimes of Guus Kouwenhoven remains in position, the High Council on Tuesday decided. The Dutch businessman, currently resides in South Africa, where a uitleveringszaak against him.

The attorney-general has advised the High Council last June in an independent opinion to the judgment against Kouwenhoven to maintain.
According to Kouwenhoven and his lawyer was the condemnation not valid, because the Liberian dictator Charles Taylor in 2003, the amnesty granted to everyone that crimes committed during the Second Liberian civil War.
The High Council considers that the amnestieregeling prosecution in the Netherlands is not in the way. The Public Prosecutor (OM) has to know “very satisfied” about the ruling.
Kouwenhoven (75) was established in 2006 to eight years in prison convicted of the illegal arms trade and acquitted of war crimes. Both Kouwenhoven, if it went against it in appeal.
In 2008, it was Kouwenhoven fully acquitted by the Hague court, but the High Council annulled the ruling and left the court in Den Bosch again to the matter looking. That sentenced Kouwenhoven on april 21, 2017 in absentia to nineteen years in prison for illegal arms traffic and complicity in Liberia and Guinea.
Kouwenhoven provided dictator Taylor, among more weapons
The Dutch businessman, it operated since the eighties, the Hotel Africa in the Liberian capital Monrovia. That was a popular meeting place for the elite around Taylor, with whom Kouwenhoven a friendly and business relationship built up.
Kouwenhoven, provided the regime of Taylor of weapons, other goods and financial resources and was involved in during the Second Liberian civil War (1999-2003) committed war crimes. Also, he borrowed staff from different houtkapbedrijven out for fighting.
It is not clear whether Kouwenhoven is delivered
Kouwenhoven was in december 2017 held in South Africa, at the request of the Dutch. The issue surrounding his extradition was many times postponed because of the poor health of Kouwenhoven. He is on bail is free, but is still under house arrest and should have been home, leaving only for medical reasons.
According to his lawyer, Inez Weski, let his state of health, the serving of a prison sentence. She has a complaint to that effect filed with the European Court for Human Rights.
