Heemskerk: ‘It should be a good and fun world cup for me’

In contrast to previous editions, Femke Heemskerk, on her seventh world swimming CHAMPIONSHIPS was not a candidate for medals at their home race. The 29-year-old South Holland is on the way after they are physically in the red ran and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro count a lot on a failure.

“This should be a good and fun world cup for me,” says Heemskerk about the titeltoernooi in Budapest on Sunday to start for the langebaanzwemmers. But because they are still on the way back after a difficult year under the French trainer Philip Lucas, she finds it difficult to transform that into a concrete goal.

“The past few months I have good times swimming, but not world leading. My goal is to get everything out of my body to pick up what’s inside. But what that exactly is… The impact of last I that regard underestimated. It takes longer to come back.”

Heemskerk was hoping in 2016 under Lucas, who is known as someone who demands that trained hard, take the next step. But instead, she was overtraining, and she was tired at the start in Rio, where they in the 200 metres disappointing sixteenth, and on the 100 meters was in the twentieth place.

The world cup is now the first major titeltoernooi since she returned to the Netherlands to get back under Marcel Wouda train, the man with whom she in the past had success. But all the old she is not yet.

“I come from far away. My body has a blow had, because I am too long in the red have been trained. But now things are going in the right direction. Since a few weeks I do strength training, for example, are fully back with the group. It will go slowly, I don’t want to force it in my build up towards my old level. And better than that.”

The difference with the past is, according to Heemskerk, even in explosiveness, and technique. “By a time less strength training have been able to do, I am not yet so explosive. And technically there are still good pieces in my races, but it is still not constant.”

The progression was still seen principally in the 200 metres. “I have a lot of stable 200 meters swum in the past few months. The 100 meters were also stable, but stable is too slow. ”

On the world cup choose Heemskerk, therefore, only the 200 metres and the estafettes to swim. The 100 metres, let them shoot. “Don’t get me wrong. I find it a pity that I the 100 metres must be missing, but it is the wisest. The history of the past year tells me that I need to be careful with my body.”

“For the 100 metres, do I still have a little more patience. The easy speed is not there yet. It costs me too much energy to speed. At the 200 meter, where the tempo is lower, the better. But I’m confident in the end, it is also in the 100 metres follow.”

The series of the 200 metres, with Heemskerk, stand for Tuesday at the world CHAMPIONSHIPS program, and later that day the semi-finals. The final is on Wednesday.
