An unknown gunman was killed by police Wednesday after opening fire on a Pennsylvania magistrate’s office and injuring a number of people, the officials said.

Among those injured in the shooting at the District Magistrate Daniel Shimshock office in Masontown, Fayette County was “a law enforcement official,” Pennsylvania State Police Troop B confirmed on Twitter.

State Police-Uniontown is currently investigating a shooting incident that took place in the District Magistrate Daniel Shimshock Office in Masontown Fayette County. The scene is secured, with no immediate danger for the community.

A German Township police officer fatally shot the unidentified gunman, Fayette County District Attorney Richard Bower said, according to The Associated Press. The shooter, who marched in the building are a foyer with a handgun, exchanged gunfire with an officer, who was wounded, before shooting at three other people, Bower said.

The coroner also reported to the scene, according to a Fayette County official who spoke to The Associated Press.

A Fayette County Emergency Management spokesman told ABC News that four people were injured and transported for medical care.

A Masontown police officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting, according to Masontown Mayor Toni Petrus. The officer was receiving treatment for hand injuries in a hospital in nearby Uniontown.

The scene in Masontown is safe. No schools, businesses or offices are locked.

The injured citizens were taken to a West Virginia hospital, whose spokesman said they were listed in fair condition.

After hearing about the shooting, County Commissioner Vince Vicites arrived at the building and learned that the coroner was called to the scene because the gunman had died, he told The Associated Press.

“At this time, we have multiple casualties and wounded a law enforcement official. There is heavy presence of the police,” state police tweeted. “We ask the public to stay away from the area at this time.”

The location is secured and there were no lock on the orders for the nearby schools, companies or offices, said the police.

Authorities asked that anyone with information contact the State Police-Uniontown on 724-439-7111.

Fayette County officials in a tweet said they were “deeply saddened” by the incident in Masontown.

“Fayette County officials will continue to assist state and local police by any means necessary,” the tweet said. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

Masontown, Pennsylvania is located about 60 miles south of Pittsburgh.
