SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Alphabet Inc. Google has hired more than a dozen microchip engineers in Bangalore, India, in the past few months and plans to soon add more, according to LinkedIn profiles, job vacancies and two managers from the sector, such as the search agency expands its program for the design of the innards of the devices internally.

The Bengaluru site, which has not been previously reported, Google is the first among the handful of large internet platform companies developing their own chips to make a team for those efforts in what has become a leading hub for the design of semiconductors in the last two decades.

Google declined to comment on the hires.

Jim McGregor, who follows the semiconductor industry for Tirias Research, said since most traditional chipmakers long had a large presence in Bengaluru, the feeling for the industry new players to start with to find experts.

“Everyone tries to keep things close to home to start, but if you reach a certain level of success you have to expand,” McGregor said.

Since 2014, Google has designed computer server chips for datacenters, and one chip for image processing, a Pixel smartphones. Its goal is the creation of more powerful and efficient devices by adjusting key components that traditionally came from companies such as Intel Corp. Inc, Microsoft Corp, Apple Inc. and Facebook Inc. have each launched similar chip design efforts, which can help them to save costs, reduce the dependence of suppliers and keep pace in the construction of attractive products.

In Bengaluru, Google has hired at least 16 engineering veterans and four talent recruiters for its “gChips” team of the traditional chipmakers such as Intel, Qualcomm Inc., Broadcom Inc., and Nvidia Corp., according to a review of LinkedIn profiles.

Rajat Bhargava describes himself on LinkedIn, Google “silicon site” in Bengaluru, saying he resigned last May after a decade at Broadcom and a year at Intel.

His staff is probably working with Google’s existing chips team in Silicon Valley to fine-tune and test the design ideas uk latest those for manufacturers, said two industry executives familiar with Google’s plans. An executive said the team can grow up to 80 people at the end of the year.

Google had 13 vacancies for the functions associated with chips in Bengaluru, according to a recent audit of the company’s career website.

Google sells smart speakers, routers, and homeland security all devices that can take advantage of the chips that the analysis of spoken commands and videos better and faster.

Microsoft and Facebook have until now concentrated chip-related rent in the United States, according to the current vacancies. Amazon has a foreign presence in Tel Aviv.
