More sustainable food, less food wastage. That is the focus during the ‘Good Food’weekend of 22 and 23 October in which the 19 municipalities of Brussels through the activities of the Brussels wants to raise awareness.
The emphasis of the ‘Good Food’weekend is on local, seasonal products, production, the use of more vegetable protein and less meat, and the fight against food waste.
Brussels Environment minister Céline Fremault (cdH) be the performance of the weekend on the first results of the Good Food strategy, which in 2016 will be rolled out.
From a study commissioned by Brussels Environment shows that 17 percent of the Inhabitants own vegetables grow – three quarters of them herbal, more than half of the vegetables and a little under 30 percent vegetables and 15 percent plan to that soon. That is in line with the target of 30 percent of Brussels households have a share of their food produce, said minister Fremault.
The region is also on the increase of the local production to supply to the citizens to broaden. At 2035 about 30 percent of the non-processed vegetables and fruit that the Brussels consume through farming in the city or the outskirts to be produced.
To make Good Food more accessible to all residents of Brussels should the supply increase and the distribution in short chains facilitated. Social grocers and co-operatives can play a role in this.
Good Food is also the transition to sustainable food guide so that, by 2020, 60 percent of the Inhabitants are consumption of meat has reduced.
The region also wants the fight against food waste. Every Brussels family throws each year 15 pounds of food away. For the Brussels-based hospitality is the order of 12,000 tons. Minister Fremault referred to a number of initiatives in the framework of the Good Food strategy were developed, such as the Rest-O-Pack, which achieve their leftovers home can bring. Today there are 83 restaurants connected.
Early this year also started the program around Good Food canteens in schools and businesses. The first canteens will next year their label and Fremault hopes 40 labels to reach out by 2020. (Belga/DB)
