School shooting happened at a high school in Noblesville, about 20 miles northeast of Indianapolis; Matt Finn reports.

A female student was in critical but stable condition early Saturday after being injured during a shooting at an Indiana high school on Friday, a family statement said.

The 13-year-old was identified as Ella Whistler in a statement released by her parents Friday night, FOX59 in Indianapolis reported.

“Her condition is critical, but we are happy to report she is stable,” the statement read.

The family asked for the privacy of their daughter at the Riley Hospital for Children, and thanked all the first responders.

The full statement reads:

“Our daughter, Ella Whistler, was involved in a horrific shooting today at her school. We spend the next few days and weeks the processing of what happened and why. But first, we wanted to say that she is doing well at Riley Hospital for Children. Her condition is critical, but we are happy to report she is stable. We would like to thank everyone across the country who prayed for our family today. We have felt those prayers and appreciate every one of them. We’d also like to thank the first responders, Noblesville police department, Indiana State Police and the medical staff and surgeons at Riley. Do not hesitate to contact our family for further comments at this time. We appreciate you respecting our privacy as we support Ella in her recovery.”

Ella was airlifted to the hospital after a male student allegedly shot her in Noblesville West Middle School, Noblesville police Lt. Bruce Barnes said in a press release Friday night.

“She is an outstanding student,” the friend said. “She is very involved in the school. A beautiful little girl. I can only imagine why this happened.”

Friends of the girl described to her the Indianapolis Star as “popular” and “very friendly.” She said that her outgoing personality was felt in their choir class.

Apart from the fact that an active member of the high school choir, she has a presence on social media that shows her posing with friends and family and the singing of popular music, the paper reported.
