It is an explosion that may have been more than 70 years in the making.

A huge crater in the middle of a cornfield in the countryside of Germany, it shall be deemed to have been made through a buried world War II bomb.

The local population in the province of Limburg say they heard a loud explosion in the middle of the night and then woke up to find a 33-foot-wide crater in the isolated area. No one was injured.

Explosives experts believe that, in the form of a 4-foot-deep crater and was almost certainly made up by a bomb, according to the news agency DPA. A lot of unexploded devices are still found in Germany, after the war ended in 1945.

A bomb-disposal service, a spokesman told Agence France-Presse it was “very possible”, a old bomb was involved.

“The crater that was examined on Monday by an explosion of the explosives clearing service to search for fragments,” a police spokesman told the agency. “The area has been used for target practice during the Second world War.

A local government spokesman told the German newspaper, Bild, that the bomb is likely to have had a chemical basis, a delay timer, which will eventually be eroded.
