Teacher allegedly fires gun in the classroom, taken into custody

A teacher is taken into custody after allegedly firing at least one shot in Georgia is a high school class Wednesday, police said.

The Dalton Police Department recognize the teacher as Jesse Randall Davidson, 53, a social studies teacher who is also the play-by-play announcements at the school football games. He has worked at the school since 2004. It was not immediately clear whether any charges would be filed against Davidson.

The police announced that no students were in the classroom at the time of the incident. The police said the teacher allegedly would not allow the students in the class. A witness reportedly heard the shot and called authorities, according to WCRB-TV.

The police did not say what kind of firearm was used, but confirmed it was a gun. The gun is restored.

A student sustained an ankle injury Wednesday following an incident at Dalton high School.


A student is injured after sustaining an ankle injury, while running inside the school during the construction of the evacuation, the Dalton Police Department tweeted. No faculty or staff were reported injured in the incident.

Bruce Frazier, public relations specialist with the Dalton Police Department, told reporters a school resource officer is deployed in the school, but it was not immediately clear where that person was at the time of the incident.

The Dalton Police Department earlier tweeted a person, presumably a teacher, was barricaded in a classroom.

Dalton high School was placed on lockdown and the police confirmed no children were in danger. The school and the surrounding area were evacuated.

The police have asked parents to pick up their children at the Northwest Georgia Trade Center. The school has about 2,000 students, according to the school’s website.

Dalton is about 90 miles north of Atlanta.
