An exchange of gunfire Monday between the police and a shoplifting suspect at a Georgia Walmart has left an officer wounded and a suspect dead, investigators confirmed. The officer, who, as a 34-year-old Matt Cooper, was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center. (Covington (Ga.) Police)
A police officer is in hospital after he was shot by a shoplifting suspect in the vicinity of a Walmart in Georgia is assisted by his wife, who has not left his side.”
Officer Matt Cooper “is still in serious condition with the bullet lodged against his carotid artery,” Covington Police wrote on Facebook.
The police said Cooper mouth the words ” I love you,” to his wife. A nurse asked, “Did you just tell her ‘I love you?'” The 34-year-old nodded yes.
The police said officers were responding to the report of a shoplifting Monday, 35 km south-east of Atlanta, where the suspects ran away, and fired, hitting Cooper in about 1 hour
Suspect Aaron Demonta Fleming, 21, was shot and killed at the scene. Investigators said the shot was probably self-inflicted. Two other suspects of the police.
Cooper was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, such as Fox News previously reported. The police said that he was moved to Grady Hospital.
“The prayers of his works, and Matt is fighting hard! The outpouring of love and concern for our officer is overwhelming,” said police on Facebook.
