NEW YORK – A legendary airport robbery has come back to haunt an 82-year-old gunman, who has been sentenced to eight years in prison for an unrelated road rage and arson by a New York judge who cited the robbery.
Vincent Asaro responded to his sentence Thursday, with horror, calling it a “death sentence.” The sentence was more than double what the federal guidelines as punishment for the 2012 car arson.
Brooklyn federal Judge Allyne (eh-LEEN’) Ross says that the population must be protected against Asaro, a former member of the Bonanno crime family.
The judge says that she is aware of Asaro 2015 acquittal in the infamous 1978 heist at the Lufthansa cargo terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport. But she also cites the evidence Asaro had the jewelry from the robbery and admitted his role.
