Five million units. So many motorcycles and mopeds to drive at a guess around in the Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi, but by 2030 it must be that all from the streets.
The city council wants to do something about the dangerous traffic situations and heavy air pollution.
Hanoi is not a good public transport network (mvv and so is the motor the designated means of transport. Just about everything is transported, from pieces of furniture to entire families and their animals. Approximately 7 million inhabitants drive there is an estimated 5 million engines around. Cars represent less than a half a million pieces.
But the growth of motor traffic is, according to the city administration out of control. Also, air pollution is a major problem in 2016 for 282 days and the alert threshold for fine dust is exceeded. The city wants all of the motors, by 2030, to prohibit and promises at the same time investing heavily in public transport. The share of the busverplaatsingen would have to rise from 12 percent today to 50 percent in the future.
But critics are questioning themselves in the plans. The city is very densely populated and there is no underground subway system. Everyone on the bus it seems impossible.
