Former dictator of Uruguay Gregorio Alvarez (91) died
The last dictator of Uruguay, general Gregorio Alvarez, at the age of 91 died. That has a military hospital in Montevideo published, according to Uruguayan media.
Alvarez was from 1981 to 1985, head of the military junta over the country prevailed.
During this period, Uruguay have the largest number of political prisoners in the world and was the country known under the name of “the torture chamber of Latin America”.
Alvarez wore the power in 1985 to the supreme court after the military, under pressure from mass protests, had agreed to free elections.
The last dictator was later sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of 55 political opponents. He was sitting since 2007.
