Ford to use the Mustang name for an electric SUV

(Reuters) – Ford Motor Co (F. N) will have to make use of the Mustang name that had previously been reserved for a muscle car and an electric sport-utility vehicle (SUV), which for customers in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and you can start ordering on Oct. 17, the company said on Thursday.

Ford has confirmed that its new electric SUV will be called the Mustang Mach for the debut event, scheduled for Los Angeles on Sunday. Up until now, the Mustang name will only be used in a line of sporty coupes to be associated with the Detroit of the 1960’s muscle car era.

The compact SUV will be among more than a dozen all-electric cars, the company plans to start by 2022 with an investment of $11.5 billion as it moves away from the traditional gas-powered cars.

In April, the No. 2 U.S. automaker invested $500 million in electric car maker Rivian, and said that it was intended to be used by the Michigan startup, a platform for the construction of a new Ford-branded electric vehicle.
