For the first luxury cruise through the former ijsgebied

The cruise ship the Crystal Serenity is from Alaska to New York, sailed through the Northwest Passage. Until recently, this journey is only possible with heavy ice breakers. Experts attributed it to the climate change that is the one thousand passengers of the cruise this “epic” trip experience.

A 14-deck-cruise ship, the Crystal Serenity, has for the first time the Northwest Passage sailed. The luxeschip had a thousand passengers, a hundred crewmembers and a team of scientists on board, and came after a trip of a month this week in New York.

The Norwegian captain Birger J. Vorland, called the journey through the fabled passage, “epic”.

Impenetrable ice

The Northwest Passage is a route from the Atlantic Ocean to the pacific Ocean by the poolarchipel of Canada.

It is a passage that for many centuries by explorers was sought, in the hope of a shorter passage and an easy seaway in North America. Most of the expeditions eventually had to be aborted, as the ships got stuck in impenetrable ice.

Climate change

It was finally the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who, with extreme difficulty, between 1903 and 1906 as the first the Northwest Passage could be navigated. Amundsen had three years to complete the trek.

Since that performance have ships, the trip only made during the summer, when the ice is thinner, and they were also always accompanied by ice breakers. Now it is the first time that a luxecruise the trip took.

Climate scientists are not very excited about the news because they are here again evidence shows that climate change is already taking place. (IPS)
