The first step in the process of selecting the right plan is to understand your needs. Here is a good place to start would be:

  • For those of you who have to connect more than three devices, and surfing on the internet, you can get by with just a basic package, with download speeds of up to 10mbps.

The comparison of the options

For your home internet service, you are going to choose between DSL, cable, fiber optics or satellite. Here’s what that means:

  • DSL –Digital Subscriber Line users will get a high-speed network connection, and a telephone jack on the wall or in an existing phone network. It works within the frequencies used by your phone, so you can use the internet to make phone calls.

Cable TV makes use of a very small portion of the cable’s bandwidth, which makes it possible for your internet service to work. You don’t have to subscribe to cable TV to have cable internet service.
  • Fiber optic – Fiber optic internet uses fibre optic cables instead of copper wires. It’s faster than DSL, and cable internet, but it is not available in all countries.
  • Satellite internet access is provided by means of communications satellites, especially in the rural areas. It is usually the most expensive, last resort option.
