Food Waste Awards 2018: these Belgian initiatives to fight against food waste

For the second time in Brussels the Food Waste Awards. The prices are the best ideas for food waste to go rewarded. These are the voedselhelden of 2018.

FoodWIN, organizer of the Food Waste Awards, awards various organisations in the categories of healthcare, food companies, spilling change-makers, local authorities, hotel and catering, catering and events. This year, the following organizations a push in the back:

Opschepper, the best Belgian spilling changemaker, is an initiative of students of the University of Antwerp. With food stalls consisting of food surpluses, they bring students and people over 65 – typically solitary eaters – together for a cosy and environmentally responsible meal.

Ikea Food Belgium is the biggest names in the future of 2018. In a year’s time, the hustle and bustle Ikea in Belgium spilling with 41 percent, which is equivalent to 99 tons of food and 427 tonnes of CO2.

For the category of health care is sheltered housing Saint-Elisabeth is chosen to be the winner. Through readings and drop-down menus for their residents, they bring the daily spilling back with an average of ten percent.

Foodsavers Gent hijacks the price for local authorities with a platform of distribution for food surpluses. These will be redistributed to financially vulnerable people through numerous Ghent social organizations.

The chosen European changemaker was finally Bubble & Squeak. Lower school children of Old Oak Primary School in the United Kingdom manage their own stand to the school. There redistribute them weekly, about forty kilograms of food to the parents.

Successful edition

It was only the second time that the Food Waste Awards were organised, but the number of entries was very high. “With more than the double number of entries, it seems that spilling more and more a focus of attention within Belgian organisations,” so says Every Markey of FoodWIN.

During the award ceremony, the audience and the winners also have an Ultimate Food Waste Hero. The european Commissioner for Health and food safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, if this ultimate award prize to the boys of Opschepper. Laurens van Opschepper promised in the future to add a little extra to do.
