Park, Florida mayor: Shooting ‘very devastating’

A gunman set off the fire alarms at a Florida high school Wednesday afternoon, attracting hundreds of students from the classroom, so that he could open fire with a semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle.

After firing a number of rounds, the shooting suspect, identified as 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, dropped his weapon and hid himself among the crowd as authorities evacuated students and teachers at marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in parkland, Florida.

The police captured Cruz more than an hour later in Coral Springs, located about a kilometre away. He was taken to a local hospital and then handed over to the police.

At least 17 people were killed and several others were injured in the shooting, the officials said. Cruz was charged Thursday 17 counts of premeditated murder.

2:19 pm

An Uber car dropped Cruz to the school at approximately 2:19 P. M., Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel announced during a press conference Thursday in the afternoon.

“The defendant went to the eastern staircase, which the building of 12, with a rifle in a black bag,” he said. “The suspect exited the stairwell [and] pulled the gun out of the case.”

Cruz, according to Israel, “prepared his gun and began to shoot in the rooms 1215, 1216, 1214. He went back to 1216, back to 1215 and then to 1213.”

Cruz, he revealed, “and he took the west stairwell to the second floor, where he shot a person in the room 1234. The gunfire lasted for a three-minute span, according to the sheriff.

Israel said Cruz “took the east stairwell to the third floor. He dropped his rifle and a backpack [and] ran down the stairs.”

Cruz eventually left the building with others who were trying to escape. He ran in the direction of the tennis courts and then took a southern direction, the sheriff said.

After the shooting, Cruz went to a Walmart and purchased a drink at a Subway for the exit of the Walmart, according to Israel, but he could not give an exact time that this happened. Cruz then led to a McDonald’s and sit for a short period of time.”

Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a tweet.

Broward Schools, said the school was after the lock of the students and faculty, and heard what sounded like gunfire.

Today, close to marjory Stoneman Douglas High School dismissal, students and staff heard what sounded like gunfire. The school immediately went on lockdown, but is now an underestimation of the students. We have been receiving reports of possible multiple injuries. Law enforcement is on the site.

A Coconut Creek police officer arrested Cruz in Coral Springs, located about a mile away from the school, and he was “taken into custody without incident,” Israel said.

Cruz appeared in court on 17 murders. The judge ordered him to be held without bond.
