The non-criminal and the incident happened at a home in Davie, just west of Fort Lauderdale, Davie Lt, Mark Leone, told WPLG.
“When the police got to the front door of the house, the pet of the family — happens to be a female boxer named Bella — walked right past him and went in the direction of the [other] officer,” said Leone in an interview with the radio station. “The officer was in fear, and drew his gun and fired a shot.”
As a police officer with the Davie Police Department, Florida, and shot himself by accident on Friday morning, a lieutenant said.
The bullet that was fired grazed the dog, but also hit the hand of the officer, who had been at the front end of the gun barrel, Leone added.
WPLG reports that surveillance video shows the officer grabbing his hand and later package as a kind of bandage around it.
