Flemish organic market is steadily growing

The interest of the average Flemish organic products will continue growing year after year. This is apparent from the new Biojaarrapport, proposed by the department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Nine in ten Belgians bought in 2016 at least one reference biological product and the total sales of organic products in that year with twelve percent. Three percent of today’s products sold in the fresh market are organic. These are the main findings of the new Biojaarrapport.

The biokoper

Who last year organic bought, did that, on average, thirteen times. To do that you have extra budget than when he adheres to would buy, for a biological product costs, on average, still thirty percent more. Therefore, it’s not surprising that families with children and a limited income little bio buy. The largest group of users are now singles of all ages, but in the long term will see the biosector also two-earner families and families with a higher income.

The bioproduct

The product that is most often purchased in the organic selection, the meat substitutes, while organic meat is just the least often purchased. Organic eggs and milk won last year’s popularity, and also the sale of the potatoes grew.

An organic product is by the other production method is more expensive than a conventional product, but there are large differences between the species. Costs organic eggs, on average, double that of a standard egg, while an organic meat substitute but sixteen percent more expensive than the standard variant.

Expectations

The trend is already underway, because between 2008 and 2016, the spending in organic products doubled in Belgium. It looks like there is not that steady growth soon an end will come to know. So switching more and more farms to organic farming: in 2016 was that the number of from 370 to 430.
