The HGTV star admitted in the essay that the getting pregnant of her fifth child came as a shock, because they “truly believed she was done” having children after the birth of her fourth child, Emmie Kay. But despite what they had originally thought, Gaines expressed her joy to add another member of the family.

“It’s sweet how, even in the most unlikely ways, we get exactly what we need for the exact moment in time,” she wrote. “It was not something I could have foreseen. But are pregnant and ‘forced’ to slow down is a gift.”
