Officials: Eight vehicles crushed in FIU bridge collapse

Government conducts press conference on the deadly bridge collapse at Florida International University in Miami.

A bridge collapse Thursday in the Florida International University, left a number of people dead, Fox News has learned. Florida Highway Patrol confirmed to Fox News that there are multiple fatalities after the “Instant Bridge collapsed just before 2 hours in the Miami-area university.

The local, regional and national politicians and legislators were quick to react to the news, calling for prayer and saying that they were closely monitoring the situation as it developed.

Here is what they have said.

Rick Scott

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said that he spoke “with Miami-Dade County Police Chief Juan Perez about the bridge collapse at the FIU. I will be in constant communication with the enforcement of the law during the day.”

A tax cut highlight the case that Scott planned to participate in was canceled in light of the news.

Bill Nelson

“My heart goes out to the victims and the families affected by this tragic bridge collapse,” Florida Senator Bill Nelson tweeted. Nelson said he asked: “Sec. of Transport (Elaine) Chao to start an immediate investigation and the support of the university as it goes through this difficult time.”

Marco Rubio

“Terrible news from Miami as a bridge is collapsed @FIU, and several deaths have been reported,” Florida Senator Marco Rubio tweeted. “We pray for the victims and the entire Panther community.”

Rubio, who said he was an adjunct professor at the school for 10 years, is referred to as the collapse of a “terrible tragedy.”

Mario Diaz-Balart

“Shocked and disappointed by the horrible SW 8 Street bridge collapse,” Florida Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart tweeted. “Pray for the victims and for the responders who are looking for survivors.” Balart said he was approached by the Chao and said he was “grateful” for her “care and support in this time.”
