Fire destroyed olympic velodrome in Rio de Janeiro
The fire brigade in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday hours have been busy putting out a fire in the olympic velodrome. The wielerstadion is partly destroyed.
The exact damage to the building must still be determined by Brazilian authorities. The velodrome was little more than a year ago, opened for the Olympic Games.
The fire Saturday night caused by a flying lantern that is on the building fell, made minister of sport Leonadro Picciani known. “It is absurd. In addition to the lantern, which the fire caused, there were several lanterns in the olympic park,” says Picciani.
The small burning lanterns are often chipped in Brazil and are controversial. Especially in the dry summer months is the government campaign against fed. There are also voices for the parting of the lanterns punishable.
The lanterns can traffic bother and forest fires cause.
