The Ghent film festival, on 10 October, adds in extremis two films to its program.
Last week was the organization of Film Fest Gent, the programs of the 44th edition. There are now two films: The Shape of Water of Guillermo del Toro and I, Tonya of Craig Gillespie. Both films are part of the section, Galas & Specials.
The Shape of Water, a horrorsprookje set in the America of the beginning of the sixties, won just last month, the Golden Lion at the Venice film Festival. ‘We already had the Golden Palm (The Square of Ruben Östlund) and the Golden Bear (On Body and Soul of Ildikó Enyedi) on the program,” says artistic director Patrick Duynslaegher. Now we’ll show for the first time in the history of the festival the winners of Cannes, Berlin and Venice, the three major European film festivals.’
The film was in Venice, also one of the favorites of our chef movie Dave Mestdach. Earlier, he laid on KnackFocus.be the political subtext. The leading roles are for a group of outsiders, such as a stupid, one black and one gay, who is a monster to try to beat out Mexico. Clear references to the current situation in the United States, in other words. ‘Del Toro has clearly amused with this subversive thrillersprookje,” said Mestdach when.
In addition to The Shape of Water takes Film Fest Gent also with the European premiere of I, Tonya, a dark comedy about one of the biggest sportschandalen in the United States. Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) is Tonya Harding, one of the world’s best kunstschaatssters. In the run-up to the Olympic Winter games of 1994, they discredited because her entourage – and possibly they are self – involved turns out to be a brutal attack on her great rival Nancy Kerrigan.
This story was during the youngest film festival of Toronto by the public to the second place for the audience award vote. The photography of the film was in the hands of a fellow countryman, Nicolas Karakatsanis, the regular cameraman of Michaël R. Roskam.
The Shape of Water is on 18 October at 20:00 will be screened in Advance. On January 31, 2018, he appears in the Belgian screens.
I, Tonya is on 20 October at 20:00 in premiere at Kinepolis. Later, in the other Belgian venues.
