The battle between your leg and your carry-on is over.
For years, the passengers in the plane have to wrestle not only with tight cavities, but also with pushing their hand luggage under the seats in front of them: the sacrifice of precious metres of space.
Now, a group of students from the University of Hong Kong have a smart solution that would free up leg room, without that the passengers have their hand luggage.
The concept for the invention, a pop-up compartment that can under airline seats and serves as a personal storage, won a competition held by the aircraft manufacturer Airbus, and the can — maybe, possibly — on aircraft all over the world.

The Fly Your Ideas contest, held in Toulouse, France, awarded the students the $ 30,000, the first prize for their innovative concept. According to Airbus, “The jury was impressed by the vision and craftsmanship of [the students] at the sight of such a simple, but effective solution for a better passenger experience. The new cabin of the aircraft design makes full use of the space between the cabin floor and cargo ceiling, to the passengers their own personal luggage space.”
More than 5,500 students, and a total of 365 items, registered in the Fly Your Ideas competition for 2017. Since the program launched in 2008, more than 20,000 students from over 650 universities in more than 100 countries around the world have participated.
Hopefully soon, we’re going to see of this ingenious invention on our flights. Our feet are especially grateful.
