Facebook apologizes to China’s Xi Jinping for the vulgar to wrong translation of his name

Facebook blamed a technical fault on Saturday, after the site lost in translation Myanmar-English messages to Chinese President Xi Jinping, during his visit to the united kingdom.

Xi’s name appeared in English translation as “Disclosure. S—hole,” according to Agence France-Presse.

“We have fixed the technical problem that is the root cause of the incorrect translation from the Myanmar into English is on Facebook,” according to a spokesperson for the social networking giant has said, according to AFP. “This wouldn’t have happened, and we are taking steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Our sincere apologies for the offence it has caused.”

Facebook said that the translation system contains an entry for “Xi Jinping,” that is, by default, the system searches for words with similar number of syllables. The incorrect translation arose because the system searches for the terms that begin with “xi” and “shi,” AFP reported.

The error was spotted during the second day of Xi’s visit to Myanmar, in which both he and Suu Kyi has signed a series of deals that China has agreed to support Burma in infrastructure projects, The Guardian reported.

The same error does not appear in the Google translation of Suu Kyi’s pages, according to the outlet.

China is now the No. 2 market, after the United States, where Facebook pulls in the sales.
