Ex-prostitute Metje Blaak makes theatre performance about life
The extraordinary life of a former prostitute, a writer and activist Metje Blaak will soon be central in a show. Together with choreographer and dancer Branka Zgonjanin tells them in Candy her story of dance, theatre and cabaret.
The show is in september at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival.
Candy is, according to the creators, a “sparkling statement” about the taboos around relating to sex work and the ageing body. “Beyond spectacular verleidingsscènes, cheerful tunes, the not-to-miss statements and make jokes, it is ultimately the vulnerable side of the performers where the Candy is all about.”
Blaak (68) worked for 25 years as a prostitute and stripteasedanseres. She was also for many years president of the association for prostitutes, the Red Thread. She also wrote an autobiography We Metje Blaak.
The show is seen at 9, 11, 12 and 13 september in the CREA Theater. The Amsterdam Fringe Festival shows eleven days of theatre and dance of new talent at more than thirty locations in the city.
