Ex-cop admits guilt in fatal wrong-way drunk driving crash

CENTRAL ISLIP, new york – A former police officer faces up to nine years in prison after admitting he drove drunk the wrong way on a highway and killed a man in a crash.

Robert Scheuerer, a former Suffolk County police officer on Long Island, pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated vehicle homicide in the September 2016 crash.

Scheuerer in collision with an oncoming Sunrise on the Motorway, killing the driver.

Newsday reports that state Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho promised to sentence the 26-year-old Scheuerer 3 to 9 years in prison. He could have faced a maximum of 8 1?3 to 25 years convicted at trial.

Attorney William Petrillo says that his client “is as remorseful as one can be.”

He was fired after he was indicted.
