Everything about Africa Cup 2017: ‘A wrong festival by enthusiasm”

The Africa Cup is perched in Gabon. The 31st edition will be played from Saturday 14 January to Sunday 5 February. You need to know about the tournament that is often full of surprises and striking moments.

The African bond be the continental tournament, initially to Libya, but the unrest in that country, it was decided to divert to Gabon.

Two years ago something happened similar to the previous edition. Two months before the start of the tournament decided Morocco to withdraw as host country for fear of ebola outbreak. Equatorial Guinea took on the organisation calculated the country that the qualification was disqualified due to the establishment of a non-speelgerechtigde player.

Ivory coast won the tournament in 2015 by Ghana in the final after penalty shoot-out defeat. Only after 22 penalties moved the ‘Orange Elephants’ at the longest end.

Piet de Visser

Piet de Visser is the Africa Cup, the most beautiful of all the tournaments. “The passion and the love of the people for the soccer ball, it is nowhere as big as in Africa,” says the 82-year-old scout from Chelsea to NUsport. “It is also not all that tactical, the players have a lot of enthusiasm. This is the wrong festival, you will see things that in Europe you will never see.”

The Angler became in the late eighties for the first time in contact with the Africa Cup, when he was still a trainer at Willem II. “We were at the time to the beat of a Gabonese team when we have a tournament played in that country. The best player was the Guinea Mohammed Sylla, and that I was to Tilburg met.”

“In the early nineties, allowed Sylla to the Africa Cup, but at Willem II, he also had to have his contract renewed. People from Guinea, invited me to be there to sign the contract. That seemed to me fun to do, so when I’m in the plane stepped”, tells the story of The Fisherman.

“The good thing was that I was at a training immediately on the bank was put. Not to help, but instantly as the captain. The coaches of Guinea were subordinate to me, because they saw me as the white coach from Europe.”

“I thought that was such a beautiful experience. I got them when in Marseille prepared for the Africa Cup. No one knew that, because I simply was coach of Willem II. My wife was even quiet on the couch and watched it on television. She was completely surprised when they saw me running along the line in a pack of Guinea.”

The criticism at the Africa Cup is that a lot of matches to watch. The Fisherman will find that there is a positive development trend in the quality of the duels. “There was a time when almost only European trainers were. They brought there tactics in and then there were indeed a lot of matches 0-0 and so boring. In Africa you can not be too long to do, because to accept that supporters and players are not. The competitions are now a lot more fun.”

The favorites

Ivory coast: The team of the French coach Michel Dussuyer hopes this year’s title to continue. It would, therefore, after 1992 and 2015 for the third time that Ivory coast is the best of Africa. At ‘Les Éléphants’ play, among others, ADO Den Haag defender Wilfried Kanon and toppers as Serge Aurier (Paris Saint-Germain), Eric Bailly (Manchester United), Wilfried Bony (Stoke City) and Solomon of goal”. (Hertha BSC).

Senegal: The Senegalese seem to be the biggest challengers of the Ivory coast. On the FIFA rankings, the team the highest ranked African country with a 33rd place. Further than a second place finish in 2002 is the country never come on the Africa Cup. In Senegal there are others Sadio Mané (Liverpool), Cheikhou Kouyaté (West Ham), Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli), Idrissa Gueye (Everton) and Mame Diouf (Stoke) in the selection.

Algeria: Algeria should absolutely be written down on the list of favourites. The selection is strong and also remained the team of the Belgian coach Georges Leekens undefeated in qualifying with a goal difference of 25 goals for and one against. Algeria won in 1990 for the first and, for now, the last time the Africa Cup, especially in their own country. Well-known players are, Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani (both Leicester City), Nabil Bentaleb (Schalke 04) and Yacine Brahimi (FC Porto).

Egypt: The biggest outsider for the title is perhaps Egypt. The team finished undefeated in the qualification with only one goal against. It is remarkable that Egypt, with twelve players are relatively much selectieleden from the own competition. The best-known players are Mohamed Salah (AS Roma) and Mohamed Elneny (Arsenal), but also Ramadan Sobhi (Stoke City) and Ahmed Elmohamady (Hull City) are in the selection.

The talents

According to Piet de Visser may the following boy’s talents go to break during the Africa Cup.

Franck Kessié – Ivory Coast
“20-year-old defender from Atalanta Bergamo. This can really be a boy that looks like is going to jump. I saw him recently in the match against Sweden (2-1 win) and played there Kessié a very strong party. I’ve heard that several big clubs rear him to sit.”

Thomas ey Of Ghana
“Midfielder that occasionally hit at Atletico Madrid. He is from 1993, so he is still very young. A boy who to me definitely noticed.”

Bertrand Traoré – Burkina Faso
“Attacker who is leased to Ajax. He was injured to Gabon, but he seems fully fit again. At Ajax they have, of course, Hakim Ziyech bought, but I think she Traoré behind striker Kasper Dolberg had to convert. At ten, functioning as a second striker, he is the best. I expect that he is on that position is going to play in Burkina Faso.”

Victorien Angban – Ivory Coast
“Defensive midfielder of Granada. I saw him for the first play by the Young Ivory coast and he has always stuck with me. He brings a lot of power and commitment to the society and he has a decent technique. He is in september only 21. I hope he gets a chance in the experienced team of côte d’ivoire.”
