Eve shrinks to the size of the costs is crucial to the self-driving sensor, and to deepen the VW tires

(Reuters) – Eve Inc., said that the size is the most important component of the “lidar” self-driving car, the sensor on a single chip, a move expected to dramatically reduce the cost of a sensor is considered to be one of the problems associated with the mass production of autonomous vehicles.

The company, which was founded by former Apple Inc. engineers, Soroush Salehian, and Mina Rezk, on Wednesday said it has taken to ensure that the investment by Porsche Automobil Holding SE PSHG_p.DE the majority of voting rights a shareholder, Volkswagen AG, VOWG_p.DE).

Lidar sensors to generate a 3-d map of the world, in order for the car to go. In addition to the map, and Eve sensor, which detects the speed of the objects, a vehicle in the area, which could help it to determine whether or not an object is hundreds of yards down the road there is a tree or a pedestrian.

The investment on Wednesday, the extent of which was not disclosed, follows an earlier deal in April by the Autonomous communities of the Intelligent Drive unit from the Audi, another Vw marque, which intends to make use of the start up of the lidar sensor, the so-called “e-tron” for the development of a fleet of vehicles, Munich, Germany).

Eve, the sensor uses a different technology than the other, the lidar units are currently being tested on the road, all of which have moving parts, and emit a powerful laser bursts. Eve, the sensor has no moving parts and uses a less powerful continuous wave. The company will be able to see the most important parts on the chip, about the size of a US quarter that can be made in the same factories that are currently in the data center and the networking stack.

“We do not use exotic components,” Salehian, said in an interview on the Eve of s the Mountain View, California, headquarters.

Eve is of the opinion that it will be able to sell the sensors for less than $500, that is 300 m (984 ft) ahead. In the beginning of the year, Eve’s plans to have a unit that is half the size of its predecessor, but with a field of view twice as wide, and 120 degrees. The goal is to have a small, final release, by 2022.

The cost and the size of the units of the Volkswagen’s concept, and is being asked to partner more deeply with the start-up, said Alex Hitzinger, a senior vice-president of the autonomous drive of the Volkswagen and served as chief executive of a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Price. Current lidar systems can cost tens of thousands of dollars, for a cost, car makers say it should come down to a few hundred dollars.

Hitzinger said that Volkswagen is looking at the use of Eve, the sensor is placed on the I. D. of the BUZZ of an electric reboot of the iconic microbus that has been scheduled to begin on or 2022 to 2023.

“The cost is very, very important,” Hitzinger said in an interview. “These things are very expensive at the time, in particular, the lidar sensor. We need to have a technology that is very scalable.”
