The ECA, an association of over two hundred European clubs, is only in favour of an expanded world cup for club teams, if the international calendar is changed.
“Seeing differently, we do not at this moment how such a event even on the busy match schedule”, said Edwin van der Sar, director of Ajax and vice-president of the ECA.
The belangvereniging met Tuesday in Amsterdam, on the plan of wereldvoetbalbond FIFA to the world cup for clubs in 2021 to expand to 24 teams. “We are always prepared to talk,” said Van der Sar. “We are also not against it. It comes to us on the way in which the FIFA this have decided.”

The world cup for clubs currently has only seven participants. The FIFA decided a week and a half ago at a conference in Miami the expansion plans for the world cup for club teams.

“We can be heard as the Dutch clubs’
The ECA said in the hotel Okura in Amsterdam, also about the various European competitions for club teams. Except Ajax and also PSV, Feyenoord, Vitesse, AZ, FC Utrecht, sc Heerenveen and FC Twente joined the ECA.
The Champions League and the Europa League get from the season 2021/2022 company of a third league, so more teams in European play.
