CAPITOL HILL – The late Republic Elijah Cummings, D-Md., will “lie in state” this Thursday in the Statuary Hall of the Capitol, prior to his funeral in Baltimore on Friday, announced officials.
Lawmakers from both parties are set to speak in memory of the house Oversight Committee Chairman, a Statuary Hall arrival ceremony Thursday morning, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif,., House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N. C.
In addition, a public viewing is scheduled for this Wednesday at the Morgan State University in Baltimore; the Congressman had served on the University Board of Regents.
Cummings, a longtime Congressman, civil rights activist, and frequent enemy of President Trump, died on last Thursday at the age of 68 years following complications, long-term health problems.
The concept of a deceased “lie in state” in the Statuary Hall, the old house chamber, is new in the Congress.
The Capitol Rotunda, is located in the center of the U.S. Capitol, and controlled was used by the house and Senate, on a regular basis for the great American figures “lying in state.” Such was the case with the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and President George H. W. Bush in the year 2018, along with the late sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, 2012. The late Rev. Billy Graham “, put in honor” in the Capitol Rotunda the beginning of 2018. “Lie in honor” as one level below “lies in the state.”

Both the house of representatives and the Senate in various memorials to the fallen members over the years. The late sen. Robert Byrd, D-W. Va., put “alone” in a flag-draped coffin in the Senate chamber in 2010. The body of the late sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N. J., also put “alone” in the Senate after he died in the year 2013.
Admittedly, the house has a number of memorial events for former members in the Statuary Hall in the course of the years. Some of the most recent were former House Speaker Tom Foley, D-Wash., in 2013, the former REP. Mark Takai, D-Hawaii, in 2016, the former house Minority Leader Bob Michel, R-Ill., in 2017, and former Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-NY, in the following year.

However, Hall bring a coffin in the Statuary, which is for a service a little different. To be the next modern models seemed to be what the Senate has with Byrd and Lautenberg. Although Cummings is “lie in state”, his coffin are not located in the rotunda in the house chamber, officials have said. Use of the Capitol Rotunda would require the adoption of a joint resolution by both the house and the Senate, but since this service is planned, in a space controlled by the house, only the house is in need of signs, the use of the Statuary Hall. However, Pelosi has chosen the term “lie in state” for Cummings.
The Senate on Monday approved a joint resolution, with the house expected to follow, for the use of the catafalque for Cummings’ services in the Statuary Hall. The catafalque is a wooden platform that was the first time at the Capitol, as President Lincoln in state, with his coffin resting on him. The catafalque has been used for most of the “state funerals”.
