Ed Lee, San Francisco mayor and “sanctuary city” advocates, dead at 65

Ed Lee, the mayor of San Francisco, died early Tuesday. He was 65.


Ed Lee, San Francisco’s 43rd mayor, died early Tuesday Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, confirmed in his office. He was 65.

The mayor ordered it to be replaced by the Board of Supervisors in 2011, mayor Gavin Newsom, Lee won again in the year 2015. Lee was known as a big supporter of San Francisco’s sanctuary city “policy, the deportees to a major news and political story, especially during the last two years of Lee’s term of office after the death of Kate Steinle in the hands of a five – time controversial”.

“It is with deep sorrow and terrible suffering, we confirm that mayor Edwin M. Lee passed away on Tuesday, the 12. December, at 1:11 PM on Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Family, friends and colleagues were at his side,” his office said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Anita, his two daughters, Brianna and Tania, and his family.”

Lee had previously served as the Director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission from 1991 to 1996, and then became the city administrator from 2005 to 2011.

He took a stand as advocates of San Francisco’s “sanctuary city” policy, said: “San Francisco is and will always be a sanctuary in the city will be.”

The policy was shot was a nationwide Problem, according to Steinle and killed by Jose Ines Garcia Zarate in the year 2015. Zarate has been deported five times and was released from San Francisco jail, despite a Federal government request to arrest him for the deportation of several weeks prior to the fatal shot.
