Dubai wants to compete with Sydney opera house

Dubai opens Wednesday its new opera house and wants to compete with the Sydney Opera House. The building has 1.900 seats and has a total of 5.798 square meters large.

The building Dubai Opera is located in the centre of Dubai, near the Burj Khalifa. It is described as the first cultural center in the Emirate where multiple genres come together.

The design is draws inspiration in the sailing ships which, for centuries by the Arabian gulf to sail. The chandelier in the hall hangs weighs over 5,000 kilograms. In addition, there are 31 different boxes in the theatre, each with 184 seats.

“In the building is a single central auditorium, but it can serve different purposes. It can be a theatre with a prosceniumboog, a concert hall and a space for exhibitions,” according to developer Jasper Hope.

The Sydney Opera House has more than 5,500 seats spread over several halls. In 2007, the building was in Australia on the UNESCO world heritage list. Emaar Properties, the developer of the opera house, hopes that the building will ever be as “iconic” as the Sydney Opera House.

On the roof of Dubai Opera there are a restaurant and a rooftop terrace with views of the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain. The first performance is Wednesday night the Spanish singer Plácido Domingo. In the first four months of the year are about fifty different performances staged, such as West Side Story and Giselle.
