District lead to delay of the Lee School name change to new options

TULSA, Okla. – A Tulsa school district wants to delay the renaming of a school is named after the Southern General Robert E. Lee middle pushback that the new name did not go far enough.

Tulsa Public Schools voted last month to name the elementary school “Lee School.” But many residents asked why the school would keep the general family name.

The Tulsa World reports that the Principal Aubrey Flowers wrote to parents Thursday, saying the Tulsa Board of Education plans to discuss for the deferral of the 1 July to the date of the official name change. She says that the delay will give the council a committee to the school of the community in the development of a new name nomination.

The council is scheduled to meet Monday.

Hundreds of people signed a petition for the change of the name of the school after the violent protests last year at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
