Detention hearing scheduled for California man accused of shooting AMERICAN diplomat

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A California man accused of shooting of an AMERICAN diplomat in Mexico will be back in a federal courtroom.

A detention hearing is scheduled for Friday afternoon in Alexandria, Virginia, for the 31-year-old Zia Zafar of Chino Hills, California.

He is charged with the attempted murder of a diplomat in the Jan. 6-images of the consular officer Christopher Ashcraft in Guadalajara. s of the recordings were captured on video surveillance, including images of a man taking aim and firing a shot at Ashcraft as he was leaving a parking garage.

So far, the prosecutors have no motive for the shooting.

Zafar faces up to 20 years in prison, if convicted. Friday’s hearing will determine whether Zafar remains in prison pending his trial.
